Savery, S. (1593/94-1683). Portrait of a bearded old man in front of a wall
Engraving, 18.7 x 14.2 cm, after Jan Lievens (1607-1674), signed "S. Saverij Excut." and monogrammed "I.L." in the plate. Mounted at left margin under passe-partout. Two copies present, a very good impression w. much contrast (paper w. unidentified shield watermark), trimmed on/ near the plate mark, mounted w. 4 thin strips of sellotape at left margin on top of the other copy; a more greyish impression but w. good margins. Both copies sl. affected by the sellotape strips and both w. traces of former mounting on verso, the dark impression w. sm. tear and fold in lower left corner. Hollstein XXIV (Savery) 140, Hollstein XI (Lievens) 78 and Hollstein XI (after Lievens) 42, only state. Both copies w. (duplicate) stamps of the Rijksprentenkabinet Amsterdam verso: Lugt 240 (stamp introduced 1806-1810), 789a (duplicates sold at aution of Frederik Muller in 1954) and 2228 (introduced late 19th cent.). The portrait was also used in J.P. Schabaelje, De Grooten Emblemata Sacra (Amst., 1654). Added: engr. portrait of a lady by Jan van Troyen (1610-1670/71) after Jacopo Palma (ca. 1480-1528).
