Mellan, Cl. (1598-1688). (1) Saint Bruno of Cologne in his cave
Engraving, 45 x 29 cm, signed "Claud. Mellan G. inven et sculp. D.D.D. Cum privilegio regis" and w. dedication on stones in lower margin, mounted at upper corners under passe-partout. Good impression on rather heavy paper, trimmed just outside the plate mark. Central horizontal fold, the sheet evenly yellowed. A good copy, especially for such a large print. Rare. Mellan is best known for his engraving dep. the Veil of Saint Veronica, a masterpiece created from a single, unbroken, spiraling line that forms Christ's face on the cloth, showcasing incredible technical skill and symbolizing divine perfection. (2) Idem. Christ on the cross. Etching and engraving, 18 x 12.5 cm, signed "C. Mellan G. inv. et f. cum privilegio", w. address of Honoré Thomas Bligny (ca. 1742-1785) and 4-line French verse below the image, mounted at upper corners under passe-partout. Fine impression, good margins. Smoothed-out folds and creases.
