Matham, J. (1571-1631). Two engravings: (1) Faith, love and hope
Engraving, 34 x 27 cm, after Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617), signed "I Matham sculp.", "HG (intertwined) invent." and w. 6-line Latin verse in the plate, mounted at upper corners under passe-partout. Very fine impression w. much contrast, on paper w. watermark of Strasbourg lily, w. initials WR (originally Wendelin Riehel). Watermark resembling Churchill 427, dated ca. 1640. Trimmed within the plate mark, smoothed-out central vertical fold, pieces of tape from former mount at left margin verso. Hollstein (Matham) 255, Hollstein (Goltzius) 189. (2) Christ and 2 disciples in Emmaus. Engraving, 26 x 18 cm, after Goltzius, signed "I Matham sculpt.", "H. Goltzius inven.", w. address "R. de baud exc." and w. 2-line Latin verse in the plate, mounted at upper corners under passe-partout. A sl. greyish impression on paper w. watermark of coat of arms, trimmed to/ near the plate mark. Pieces of tape from former mounting at left corners verso. Hollstein (Matham) 60; Hollstein Goltzius 167. With collector's stamp of Adolf Daniel Crakau (d. 1888) (Lugt 89). The sale of his collection was held by C.G. Boerner in Leipsiz in the same year, this print is almost certainly lot 2262 in the auction catalogue. Both prints rare.
