Dieter Roth. Berlin 1 proof, 1970
Screen print in green and offset lithograph on wove paper, 32.5 x 46 cm. Signed and dated in pencil in lower right corner. Features a grid of 3 x 3 b/w lithographed postcards depicting images of the city of Berlin, with the silhouette of the Siegessäule (Victory Column) reserved in the silkscreen layer. In passe-partout 50 x 60 cm. Minor irregularity to the top center, otherwise in excellent condition.
An unusual version, possibly a unique proof, related to the famous series 'Deutsche Städte' (1970), comprising 5 works, each featuring 25 reproduced b/w postcards decipting landmarks from four German cities, arranged in 5 x 5 grid. The grid is covered with a monochrome silkscreen layer incorporating a cut-out silhouette derived from one of the pictured landmarks, matching only one of the underlying postcards. The series was published in an edition of 100 and includes Munich (orange), Heidelberg (olive), Dusseldorf (light blue), Berlin 1 (green), and Berlin 2 (pink). The present work is a variation on Berlin 1, showing the upper left section of the regular print, in a grid of 3 x 3 postcards, executed at a larger scale. No other copies traced.
