Luis Camnitzer. Uruguayan Torture

New York, Alternative Museum, 1984. Staple bound, die-cut front wrapper, 28 x 21.5 cm, 16 pp. Catalogue/artist's book published in conjunction with the exhibition of Camnitzer's 'Uruguayan Torture Series' (1983). Features b/w illustrations of photo-etchings with facsimile captions, and texts by Robert Browning and Madeleine Burnside in English. Small brown spot on last page, else a good copy.

The seminal series by the Uruguayan/American conceptual artist Luis Camnitzer (b. 1937) addresses the torture of civilians under the Uruguayan dictatorship (1973 to 1985). Stark conceptual images, paired with with diary-like captions, compel the viewer to imagine the relationship between torturer and victim. Scarce, no copy found in trade.
