Carlos Leppe (1952-2015), a Chilean artist, is regarded as one of the most influential Latin American 'action'/ performance artists. In the 1970s he began using his own body as material, and experimented with different social, aesthetic and gender norms. He was a central figure in the Chilean neo-avant-garde (Escena de Avanzada), alongside artists such as Lotty Rosenfeld, Carlos Altamirano, Juan Castillo, Alfredo Jaar, and the writers Diamela Eltit and Raúl Zurita.
